This year’s Pilgrimage takes place on Sunday 23rd August 2026

Pilgrims set off to walk to Welsh Newton from

St Mary’s Church, Monmouth after 9.15 a.m. Mass.

Everybody welcome - bring a packed lunch.

3.00p.m . Welsh Newton

We meet for Rosary, Readings and Prayers at

St. John Kemble’s Grave in the Churchyard at Welsh Newton.

4.15p.m. Monmouth

Benediction follows in St Mary’s Church, and afterwards tea will be served in the garden,

and produce sold.

People have prayed at St. John Kemble’s Grave from the time of his martyrdom in 1679 to the present day

The Annual Pilgrimage is a blessing for the Parish and all who come.

Fourth Thursday of Every Month

Join the Safeguarding Team at their Monthly Safeguarding Café

Since launching in 2024, the Safeguarding Cafés have proven to be an excellent way for the Safeguarding Team to connect with parishioners and safeguarding volunteers right across the Archdiocese. From Hereford to Swansea and Builth Wells to Cardiff, the team have been bringing these informal drop-in sessions to parish communities the length and breadth of the Archdiocese.

What are the Safeguarding Cafés?

The cafés are relaxed, drop-in sessions where anyone can come along for a coffee and a chat with a member of the Safeguarding Team. There is no need to book – just turn up between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm on the 4th Thursday of each month.

Whether you have a concern you would like to discuss, need help with an administrative matter, want to connect with the team as a safeguarding volunteer, or simply want to find out more about safeguarding in your parish, these sessions are open to all.

Adoremus Christian Art Competition

A national Catholic schools Art Competition is being held in the lead-up to Adoremus 2026 (Saturday 10 October), inviting young people to reflect creatively on themes such as the Blessed Sacrament, the presence of Jesus, and the beauty of our cathedrals. Entries are open to ages 6–18, with a winner in each age group and an overall prize, and should be submitted by 15 September 2026 . We warmly encourage schools and pupils to take part in this opportunity to pray, imagine, and create.

The Sacred Heart: A School of Love, Mercy, and Reparation

The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is more than a pious sentiment or a traditional image on a church wall. For the Church, it is a way of contemplating the mystery of Christ —his saving love made visible in his pierced side, culminating on the Cross, and continuing today in the life of grace.

What “Sacred Heart” Means

The Church teaches that the term “Sacred Heart of Jesus” denotes not merely “a piece of flesh,” but the entire mystery of Christ —his person, and his love considered in its most intimate essential reality: God’s infinite love for us .

In this sense, devotion to the Sacred Heart is a gaze on Jesus:

pierced by the lance,
whose side reveals a “wondrous sacrament”,
and from which “blood and water” flow—signs deeply connected with the Church’s life of grace.

This is why the Directory places devotion to the Sacred Heart within the Church’s wider scriptural and liturgical horizon: it is meant to lead believers to a deeper knowledge of Christ.

The Sacred Heart and the Gospel of Love

At the heart of Christian faith is God’s love—tender, real, and offered freely. The Sacred Heart devotion highlights that love as divine and human , not abstract. Pope Francis describes the Sacred Heart as a “synthesis of the Gospel” : it expresses our openness in faith and adoration to Christ’s divine-human love.

The Scriptures underline the same logic: love comes from God, and those who abide in love abide in God.

Not Just an Interior Feeling: Conversion and Reparation

The Sacred Heart devotion is also explicitly moral and spiritual, not only emotional. The Directory describes it as calling for:

conversion and reparation ,
love and gratitude ,
apostolic commitment ,
and dedication to Christ and his saving work.

That means the devotion should mature into real life: learning to return to God when life drifts, to repair the damage caused by sin, and to serve others with the charity that flows from Christ.

The Meek and Humble Heart

The Sacred Heart also teaches how Jesus transforms the burdens of human life. In the Gospel, Jesus invites those who are weary to come to him, promising rest, and describing himself as meek and humble of heart .

This connects directly to the Directory’s presentation of devotion as a way of looking at Christ pierced by love—and learning from him.

Approved Devotions: How Catholics Traditionally Live It

The Church recognizes that various practices grow around this devotion. Among them are:

personal consecration ,
family consecration ,
the Litany of the Sacred Heart ,
the act of reparation ,
and devotion to the First Fridays , which historically supported the return to confession and Communion.

Importantly, the Directory also cautions against reducing First Friday practices to mere routine or “credulity,” insisting on instruction and active faith —and it reminds Catholics of the primacy of Sunday as the foundational feast of Christian life.

Images Matter—But Theology Must Remain

Because devotion is often expressed visually, iconography has a role. The Directory says that connecting a devotion with its iconographic expression is normal and positive.

At the same time, it warns that inconveniences can arise when images no longer communicate the devotion’s theological content—especially when art becomes over-sentimental and fails to encourage a reverent approach to the mystery.

This is a helpful pastoral reminder: whatever the image, the devotion’s aim should stay anchored in Christ crucified— his side pierced , with blood and water flowing.

Sacred Heart Devotion and Private Revelations

Some popular devotion is linked historically to visions received by particular saints. The Church acknowledges these as meaningful but also clarifies how they fit in.

Pope Francis teaches that the Sacred Heart devotion:

is not an obligation to accept private revelations as if they were God’s Word,
and “cannot be said ‘to owe its origin to private revelations.’”

In other words: the devotion stands on Christ’s reality—his pierced love in Scripture and the living faith of the Church—and private revelations may be a supportive encouragement, not the foundation.

A Simple Way to Pray During the Week

If you’d like a practical rhythm that stays faithful to what the Church describes, consider this pattern:

A look at Christ : spend a few minutes contemplating the love revealed in his pierced side.
A response : make an act of love and gratitude, asking for conversion and a spirit of reparation.
A mission : choose one concrete act of charity during the week, letting Christ’s love pass into neighbor-love.

The Sacred Heart devotion is meant to shape a Christian life where love is not only felt, but lived—through prayer, repentance, and service rooted in Jesus’ merciful Heart.

Next weekend, we mark Day for Life , celebrated each year across England and Wales on the third Sunday of June . This year, it falls on Sunday 21st June .

Day for Life is an important moment in the life of the Church, reminding us of the dignity and sacredness of every human life. The Church teaches that life is to be cherished and protected from conception through to natural death , and this day offers an opportunity to reflect more deeply on that call.

The theme for this year is: “The Wonder of the Child in the Womb.”

It invites us to recognise and celebrate the beauty and mystery of new life, and to renew our commitment to supporting both mothers and their unborn children with compassion and care.

Supporting the Day for Life Fund

A second collection will be taken at both Masses next weekend in support of the Day for Life Fund . This fund provides vital financial assistance to organisations working to uphold the Church’s mission of protecting human life at every stage.

Each year, donations from parishes are distributed to support specific projects that care for life, offer practical help to those in need, and promote a culture of dignity and respect.

On Saturday 20th June , you are warmly invited to take part in an Intentional Accompaniment Day at Our Lady of Peace in Llanelli. This special gathering offers a practical and inspiring opportunity to deepen your understanding of how to walk alongside others in faith.

Led by missionaries from Catholic Christian Outreach (CCO) , the day will introduce the approach of Intentional Accompaniment — a simple but powerful way of journeying with others. Rather than feeling unsure about how to share our faith, we are invited to meet people where they are, listen attentively, and gently guide them towards a deeper relationship with Christ.

Throughout the day, you will:

Discover practical tools for sharing your faith naturally and authentically
Learn how to support others as they explore and grow in their relationship with God
Gain confidence in accompanying others towards conversion

A Summer of Mission Across the Archdiocese

This summer, the Archdiocese is delighted to partner with Catholic Christian Outreach (CCO) for a three-week Diocesan Mission taking place across Cardiff-Menevia from 19th June to 5th July 2026 .

As part of this mission, twelve CCO missionaries will join us, bringing their experience and enthusiasm to help renew and strengthen our call to evangelisation. Central to their work is a practical approach known as Intentional Accompaniment — learning how to walk alongside others, supporting them on their journey of faith and gently leading them towards a deeper relationship with Christ.

A wide range of events and opportunities are being offered throughout the mission, all open to everyone in the Diocese:

Set in the heart of Cardiff, Nightfever offers a sacred space for all who pass by. Whether you are a regular churchgoer, someone searching for meaning, or simply curious, you are warmly invited to come in, light a candle, and take a moment of stillness in God’s presence.

First Holy Communion

We warmly congratulate the twenty children from our parish who recently received their First Holy Communion. It was a joyful and grace-filled occasion for them, their families, and our whole community. Since Christmas, a total of sixty children have now taken this important step in their journey of faith, and we give thanks for each one of them.

Looking ahead, the next preparation programme will begin shortly after Christmas, early in the new year. It will be open to children who will be in Years 3 to 6 in the academic year 2026/27.

Further details and application forms will be made available after the Summer holidays. In the meantime, we are very happy to receive early expressions of interest from families who wish their children to take part.

CAFOD Campaign: Tackling the Global Debt Crisis

The campaign to tackle the global debt crisis continues to gather momentum, as parishes across England and Wales stand in solidarity with communities most affected.

Last year, 500 parishes joined the global Church’s call to address the growing debt crisis that is having a devastating impact on low-income countries. We extend our sincere thanks to all the parishes in the Archdiocese of Cardiff-Menevia that took part in this vital effort.

Pope Francis repeatedly called for action during the Jubilee Year, inspiring a powerful response. More than 44,000 people signed CAFOD’s petition, demonstrating a strong commitment to justice and global solidarity. Encouragingly, 2025 brought hopeful signs of progress, and this year we are building on that momentum.

Why this matters

While borrowing is a normal part of economic life for all countries, low-income nations are facing a deeply unfair system. Due to complex global financial structures, they are often forced to pay significantly higher interest rates than wealthier countries. In many cases, the original debt has already been repaid, but spiralling interest keeps nations trapped in a relentless cycle.

This has serious consequences. Money that should go towards essential services—such as food, healthcare, and education—is instead diverted to repay creditors. Governments are left facing impossible choices between caring for their people and meeting debt obligations.

Wesley Chibamba, Policy and Advocacy Officer for Caritas Africa, highlights the human cost:

“We have to find a solution. At the moment people are dying because they can’t access healthcare. Children cannot go to school. People are going hungry and children are sleeping on empty stomachs because the governments have debt obligations. Governments don’t have the capacity to respond to any kind of humanitarian crisis.”

Signs of hope—and the road ahead

Thanks to global campaigning efforts during the Jubilee Year, the debt crisis has risen up the agenda at international summits. World leaders have acknowledged the need for urgent reform of the global financial system.

However, much more needs to be done. A fair and sustainable system is essential so that low-income countries can thrive rather than struggle under unsustainable debt.

The UK has a unique opportunity to lead change, as it prepares to host the G20 in 2027. This gathering of the world’s most powerful economies represents a critical moment to push for meaningful reform.

Corpus Christi Procession

On Sunday 7th June, the Corpus Christi Procession will once more make its way through the streets of Cardiff.

The Procession will start at 3:00pm from Nazareth House (please arrive by 2:30pm), moving along Colum Road and Park Place, past the Museum and City Hall, through the underpass and on to Greyfriars. It will then head down Park Place and along Queen Street before finishing at St David’s Metropolitan Cathedral in Charles Street.

Refreshments will be available afterwards.

Entering Ordinary Time

Ordinary Time begins after the Christmas and Epiphany season, pauses for Lent, and then resumes after Pentecost, continuing until Advent.

During this time, the Church focuses on the life and teachings of Jesus, especially on Sundays. Week by week, we listen to the Gospel readings, which help us come to know Christ more deeply.

Ordinary Time reminds us that our faith is lived not only in special seasons, but in everyday life. It is a time to grow as disciples, allowing Christ to be present in all we do.

As we take part in Sunday Mass and hear the Word of God, may it strengthen our faith, draw us closer to God, and inspire us to live with love and charity each day.

The Cycle of Prayer: During Ordinary Time (Summer, up to September)

We are asked to pray for these intentions:

A Deeper Understanding between Christians and Jews;
Those who Suffer Persecution, Oppression and Denial of Human Rights;
Europe;
Human Life;
Seafarers.

Confessions

Over the next two weekends (23rd/24th and 30/31 May), Confessions will not take place before either the Saturday Vigil Mass or the Sunday morning Mass, as these will be First Holy Communion Masses.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation will return to its usual schedule on 6th and 7th June .

First Holy Communion Celebrations

This weekend (23 ^rd & 24 ^th May), 13 of our children will receive Jesus for the first time in the Holy Eucharist. Next weekend (30 ^th & 31 ^st May), another 9 children will also receive Him for the first time.

First Holy Communion is a beautiful and unforgettable personal meeting with Jesus, when He gives Himself to us as food for the soul under the appearances of bread and wine.

Please keep all the children (and their families) in your prayers as they prepare and rejoice in this great step of belonging to Christ and His Church.

This year's Corpus Christi Procession will start from Nazareth House at 3:00pm (please arrive by 2:30pm), moving along Colum Drive and Park Place, past the Museum and City Hall, through the underpass and on to Greyfriars. It will then head down Park Place and along Queen Street before finishing at St David’s Metropolitan Cathedral in Charles Street.

Mary’s faithful presence at Easter and Pentecost invites us to deepen our trust in God and openness to the Holy Spirit. In this spirit, you are encouraged to make May a month of prayer with Mary , especially through the daily Rosary , which draws us more deeply into the mysteries of Christ.

A Simple invitation: During May, consider committing to praying the Rosary each day, even briefly.

We have received the following statement from Archbishop Mark , shared after the recent meeting of the Catholic Bishops of England and Wales in Rome.

In solidarity with the Holy Father, the Bishops invite all people of goodwill to renew their commitment to peace and justice, and they ask Catholics in particular to redouble their prayers for those affected by conflict across the world. Rooted in the hope of Easter, this message reminds us of our shared Christian responsibility to be peacemakers and bridge‑builders.

In 2025, St Philip Evans parish raised an incredible £2,617.70 through Red Boxes and additional donations to Missio and the Mill Hill Missionaries . Thanks to the remarkable generosity of our parishioners, this was the largest contribution made by any parish in Cardiff this year.

Our missionary community at St Philip Evans is part of a worldwide network, united in prayer and practical support for missionaries serving overseas. These donations make a real difference to communities across the globe, helping them to grow and flourish in faith and service.

This year’s Red Box Thank You Poster features the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament , whose work is just one example of how your generosity helps sustain missionary communities. We are deeply grateful to everyone who gives so faithfully and prayerfully.

He invites every unmarried man who is open to this call to join him for Evening Prayer at St David's Cathedral, Cardiff, on Sunday 31st May at 3:30pm , followed by an opportunity to meet with the Archbishop and others exploring the same vocation.

A Six-Week Study Programme Led by Archbishop Mark

In January, Archbishop Mark shared a pastoral letter with our Archdiocese. Titled Heart Speaks to Heart – drawing on the motto of St John Henry Newman – it sets out a vision for our diocese to grow as a missionary and synodal Church, rooted in prayer and built on four pillars:

Evangelising Zeal
Formation in Faith
Loving Service of Those in Need

Now, Archbishop Mark has taken that letter and broken it into six study pieces, to be explored over six weeks. Each piece includes the Archbishop’s own words alongside reflection questions designed to prompt honest, open conversation.

This year's Chrism Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday of Holy Week (31st March) at 11am at St David’s Metropolitan Cathedral, Cardiff. There will be light refreshments in the Jane Hodge Hall in the Cornerstone after the Mass.

Divine Mercy Sunday

Sunday 12th April

There will be two opportunities to celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday within our deanery.

At St Joseph’s Church (New Zealand Road, CF14 3BR) , the celebration begins at 2:00 pm with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Confession, followed by a 2:45 pm talk on the Divine Mercy Chaplet, the Chaplet at 3:00 pm , veneration of the Divine Mercy image at 3:15 pm , Benediction at 3:30 pm , and then Mass, with refreshments afterwards in the hall.

At St Alban on the Moors (Swinton Street, Splott, CF24 2NT) , Confessions will be available from 2:00–4:00 pm , with the Blessing and Veneration of the Divine Mercy Image at 2:30 pm and the Divine Mercy Chaplet at 3:00 pm .

How to Prepare Your Heart for the Feast

The Church offers us simple but meaningful ways to enter fully into Divine Mercy Sunday:

Celebrate the Feast on the Sunday after Easter
Repent sincerely of all sins
Place complete trust in Jesus
Go to Confession before or on Divine Mercy Sunday
Receive Holy Communion on the day of the Feast
Venerate the Divine Mercy Image
Show mercy to others through actions, words, and prayers

These steps help us open our hearts to the graces Jesus promised to those who seek His mercy with faith.

What is the Easter Triduum?

The Easter Triduum is the sacred three‑day celebration that stands at the very heart of the Church’s liturgical year.

It begins on the evening of Holy Thursday and continues through Good Friday and Holy Saturday, concluding on the evening of Easter Sunday.

Although it spans three days, the Church celebrates it as one single, continuous liturgy that leads us through the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus.

Across these days, we journey from the Mass of the Lord’s Supper , to the solemn commemoration of the Lord’s Passion , and finally to the joy of the Easter Vigil , where the Resurrection is proclaimed.

The Triduum invites us to enter deeply into the Paschal Mystery and to walk with Christ through the events that bring us new life and hope.

Christmas Craft Fair

St Philip Evans Parish is pleased to announce that the Christmas Craft Fair will be returning this year on Saturday 7th November , from 11:00am to 2:00pm in the church hall.

The fair aims to celebrate the creative talent within our parish and the wider community. Anyone interested in having a stall is encouraged to get in touch, as we would love to showcase a wide variety of handmade and craft items.

Volunteers will be needed to help with setting up, serving teas and coffees, and providing cakes and other refreshments. A very special guest— Father Christmas —will also be making an appearance during the event.

We are also forming a small team to help plan and organise the fair. Those who would like to get involved are invited to email the parish office . After Easter, further details will be shared about stall bookings, pricing, and the organising team.

More information will follow in due course—everyone is warmly encouraged to take part.

Men’s Walking Pilgrimage — Seven Churches of Cardiff

We are pleased to share details of this year’s Men’s Walking Pilgrimage , which will take place on Saturday 21st March . The day will begin at St. Alban’s, Splott , with 8:00am Mass , before the group sets out on a prayerful walk across the city.

Inspired by St Philip Neri’s Seven Churches devotion in Rome , the pilgrimage is intended to deepen prayer and strengthen fraternity among those taking part. For one day, Cardiff becomes our Rome , as the men make their way between seven churches. At each stop, there will be a short reflection on the Passion of Christ , along with time for praying the Rosary and the Stations of the Cross .

Throughout the walk, the pilgrims will carry two special intentions in prayer:

Those who will be received into the Church this Easter
Vocations to the priesthood and religious life in our Archdiocese

Our own church will be open at the scheduled time to welcome the pilgrims, offering a quiet space for prayer before they continue their journey.

SVP and CAFOD Work Experience

Emmaus Encounter Holy Week Retreat

The next event run by 'Emmaus Encounter', the Archdiocesan ministry to young adults aged 18-30 is a residentia Holy Week retreat at Belmont Abbey taking place from March 27th to 29th.

The retreat costs £150pp, plus a £25 single supplement. The retreat is full board, with a full timetable of activities, including a trip into Hereford on the Saturday to learn about local martyr St John Kemble.

This event is for young adults aged 18-30 .

St Oscar Romero’s life and witness continue to inspire Christians across the world in the pursuit of justice, peace, and solidarity with those who are oppressed.

We are especially mindful of our responsibility to support parishioners and young people in discovering his story and understanding how his faith-led courage speaks powerfully to the challenges of the modern world.

To mark the feast day, Fr Michael Doyle will celebrate Mass at 12.45pm at Cardiff Cathedral .

Following the Mass, we are delighted that Clare Dixon , Co-Chair of the Romero Trust, will speak on the theme: “ Romero: A Reason to Hope .”

This celebration will offer a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the life, faith, and legacy of St Oscar Romero, particularly his work for justice in Latin America and his enduring relevance today.

We are keen to welcome parishioners and young people from the secondary schools of the Archdiocese (Year 10 and above) to be part of the congregation. I have contacted the schools directly.

There will be a Q & A session afterwards in the Mostyn room with Clare Dixon , offering parishioners and students the chance to engage more deeply with Romero’s story and ask questions.

A Pastoral Message to the Archdiocese of Cardiff-Menevia

Archbishop Mark has published a pastoral letter calling the Archdiocese of Cardiff-Menevia to become a missionary and synodal diocese, built on a foundation of prayer and four key pillars: youth and vocations, evangelising zeal, formation in faith, and loving service of those in need.

This letter, titled ‘Heart speaks to heart’, takes its inspiration from St John Henry Newman’s motto and challenges Catholics across south and mid Wales and Herefordshire to encounter Christ more deeply and share that encounter with others. The Archbishop poses direct questions throughout: Are our parishes places that make disciples? Do we really believe Jesus is with us, or do we live as practical atheists? Do our initiatives reach beyond the circle of friends we already have?

The letter will be broken into six pieces for study during Lent or Eastertide, with reflection questions for use in parishes, schools and communities across the archdiocese.

A huge ‘THANK YOU’ for your generosity. The response to my appeal for Christmas Gifts for the seafarers I meet in the Port of Cardiff has fantastic. You have placed so many beautiful presents in the boxes.

Since just before Christmas, I have passed on your gifts to over 70 seafarers and so far I have not used up half of what you have given to me. Many more seafarers this month and next will enjoy the chocolates, sweets and biscuits and be grateful for the toiletries and warm gloves, socks, hats and scarves. The seafarers I have already seen since Christmas have been amazed at your kindness and asked me to pass on their grateful thanks.

Bishops Call on Senedd to Reject Assisted Suicide Bill

Archbishop Mark and Bishop Peter Brignall, Bishop of Wrexham, have issued a joint statement ahead of a crucial Senedd debate and vote on assisted suicide legislation.

On Tuesday 27th January, Members of the Senedd will be asked to decide whether Wales should give its consent to Westminster’s Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill – a law that would legalise assisted suicide.

The Bishops express their deep concern for the proposal, which would “represent a profound change in how society responds to those who are terminally ill”, and propose instead to “strengthen palliative and end-of-life care so that every person can live their final days with dignity, comfort, and peace.”

On Monday 26th January, the eve of the vote, the Bishops invite those who can to observe a day of fasting “to be in solidarity with those who are most vulnerable to the proposed Bill, and that those intent upon passing it, may undergo a change of heart.”

Darul Isra Mosque are excited to host an interfaith talk exploring Mary, Mother of Jesus.

They have invited Canon Andrew Lightbrown , a prominent figure in the Church in Wales known for his commitment to interfaith dialogue, to speak alongside Dr Abdul-Azim Ahmed , the Deputy Director of the Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK at Cardiff University.

Their topic will explore the Immaculate Conception from both Christian and Muslim perspectives. This promises to be an insightful and engaging talk. They would love for you to join them in Darul Isra Mosque, Cathays, CF24 4BG from 7:30pm – 9:00pm.

While we are saying thank you for his active service, we are delighted that Deacon Steve is not going anywhere! He will still be involved in the Parish in any way that Fr Keith would like him to be.

Deacon Steve has served our Parish for 15 years and we are profoundly grateful for his steady presence. During his tenure, he has faithfully assisted:

His impact on the parish, both in visible ministries and in the many unseen tasks, is immeasurable.

St Philip Evans Parish 40th Anniversary Celebrations

On Sunday 26th October we commemorated 40 years since the first Mass was celebrated in our church.

After Mass we went into the Hall for a shared lunch. The food reflected the parish's international membership and was delicious. I'm sure no-one went home hungry. In fact, there was some food left over after we had all taken what we wanted. Nothing was wasted, it was parcelled up by Tracey and Howard, or H as we know him, and shared with 7 families-in-need living close to the church.

During the festivities we presented Chris Barry with a card and a bouquet of flowers. Fr Keith will celebrate four Masses for her intentions as a mark of gratitude for her long-standing service and commitment to our church.

They are small welcome notices for all visitors to the parish, with a QR code they can scan if they would like to make a donation.

This is a special occasion for the whole parish. It is 40 years this weekend since the first Mass was celebrated in our church building.

Let us give thanks for all those who worked so hard to enable us to have our lovely church building and to maintain it over the past 40 years.

Let us also remember in our prayers all who have worshipped in this church - family, friends and neighbours, parishioners, visitors and passers-by.

After the 10.30 am Mass on Sunday we will have our Celebration Lunch

YOU ARE ALL WELCOME.

The Main Hall will be open before the 10.30am Mass so that you can leave food there then, rather than bring it into Church.

The bar will be open before and during the lunch.

Teas and coffees (free) will also be available at the bar before the meal.

If you have been unable to sign up in advance, you will still be very welcome.

Volunteers are welcome to help the day go smoothly – the more the merrier!

Emmaus Discover Youth Retreat

The Emmaus Discover Youth Retreat for 13 – 17 year olds will take place at St David's College in Cardiff, on Sunday 23rd November, which is the feast of Christ the King. That feast is also known as National Youth Sunday.

The day runs from 10am to 5pm, and it includes the celebration of Holy Mass with Archbishop Mark. Transport assistance available from different parts of the diocese. The day costs £10 per person, which includes travel, lunch, and the day's activities.

Jubilee Celebration at Usk

This year the Solemnity of All Saints has been transferred to Sunday 2nd November under the rules for Holy Days of Obligation in England and Wales. I am writing to thank you for the donation of 197 Kg of food in the period July to September 2025 from St Philip Evans RC Church Llanedeyrn, which will provide a 3-day parcel of food and other essentials for 17 people.

In 2024-25 Cardiff Foodbank fed 12,726 people, of whom 4,871 were children under the age of sixteen. This year demand continues to grow. In these times of economic pressure and uncertainty the Foodbank is continuing to support those in financial crisis across Cardiff not only with food and toiletries but, where necessary, signposting people to further support.

We are privileged to partner with 170 referral agencies who are engaged in supporting people in and through their crises. With the help of over 150 volunteers, and donations of food and finance from our wonderful supporters, we are working together to ensure people in crisis have not only enough food, but also hope.

Cardiff University Chaplaincy Request

The university chaplaincy is a great way to build strong connections between local parishes and the Church's mission to evangelize. Many Catholic students choose to study at Cardiff University, Cardiff Met, South Wales University, and The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama . For these students, this is a challenging yet exciting time as they transition from living with their families to living on their own.

During this time, students can re-examine their faith while being exposed to many different beliefs, including those who have no faith. The chaplaincy is there for both students and university staff.

The chaplaincy is a safe haven for everyone associated with our universities, regardless of their background or beliefs. It is a place where they can feel the true hospitality of the Gospel. While our reach is wide, it is not always deep. That is why I'm inviting members from our parishes to help us build a stronger chaplaincy team.

A Chaplaincy Team

The team's main duty is to work with the Chaplain to coordinate the chaplaincy's outreach and services across the Cardiff, Treforest, and Newport campuses. The central chaplaincy building is in Cardiff. The following areas are key to making the Gospel's hospitality effective:

Hospitality: Create a welcoming, safe, and non-judgmental environment where visitors feel respected. The most fundamental way to do this is by providing meals.

A Welcoming Space: Maintain a warm and inviting place where people can relax, unwind, and enjoy each other's company.
Serving Others' Needs: Moving away from home is both exciting and challenging. Students often need mentoring and guidance on practical matters like cooking, budgeting, and balancing work, social life, and downtime.

Serving these needs not only helps them but also allows grace to shape and form those who serve.

Spirituality: Forming relationships can be difficult, as how we interact with others is shaped by our past. Prayer is a key area that requires guidance, much like the apostles' request to Jesus, "Teach us how to pray". Our prayer life reflects how we live. Days of recollection and reflection can help students and adults develop a spirituality that both reflects and shapes their lives in the Spirit.

RCIA and Catechesis: Catechists have the chance to encourage and guide those who come to the chaplaincy with questions about the Catholic faith.

Social Teaching in Action: The chaplaincy supports student-led groups like Pro-Life, SVP, Pax Christi, and Young Christian Workers. These groups are an important way to put the Church's social teachings into practice and grow in faith. As the saying goes, "the harvest is great, but the labourers are few".

I know these are ambitious goals, and that big things take time. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Of course, I will need to request references and a DBS check for anyone who volunteers. This year, the Church has been celebrating a significant anniversary. It’s 1,700 years since the Council of Nicaea. This great gathering of Bishops from around the Church began the work to formulate the creed we proclaim Sunday by Sunday. It is the content of this creed that is our mission, so that we may know and love God in this life, in order to be happy with him forever in the next. The creed begins with a profound proclamation, “I believe…” This is the theme for Evangelii Gaudium Sunday 2025

If so, the Parish needs you! It would be good to bring together a group of people who could support our organists Chris Barry and Mary Affley. They have regularly accompanied the hymns and Mass settings every weekend but would appreciate being able to share the responsibility with others. In fact, Chris played the organ at the very first Mass celebrated in St Philip Evans church 40 years ago and has regularly done so ever since

A list of the hymns is always available in advance and music is provided.
