National Shrine of Our Lady of the Taper - Thursday 6th August

As part of the National Eisteddfod celebrations, everyone is warmly invited to attend the Eisteddfod Mass at the Welsh National Shrine of Our Lady of the Taper, Cardigan , on Thursday 6 August 2026 at 6.00pm .

This year's Mass falls on the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord and will be celebrated by Fr Matt Roche-Saunders , who will also preach.

The Eisteddfod Mass provides a special opportunity to gather in prayer during Wales' national cultural festival, celebrating our faith, language, heritage and community. A warm welcome is extended to everyone, whatever their denomination or belief.

Following the Mass, refreshments will be served and all are warmly invited to stay and enjoy fellowship together.

Your contributions will help support seafarers and fishers worldwide, providing practical assistance, pastoral care, and a welcome source of comfort for those who spend long periods away from home and their loved ones. We will share the total amount raised as soon as it is available.

Oppose Assisted Suicide

A message from Archbishop Mark on Opposing the Assisted Suicide Bill

There will be a Second Reading and vote in the House of Commons for the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life Bill) on 11 September. As Catholics, we oppose this legislation in principle as it attacks the innate dignity of every person. It is also very poorly written and gives no safeguards to healthcare staff, nursing homes, or hospices all of whom will be pressured to implement the bill if the legislation is passed.

I encourage all Catholics to write to their MP. The Bishops' Conference has produced has a scannable QR code, available on its website at: cbcew.org.uk/opposing-assisted-suicide . On the page, there are various resources, copies of statements and guidance on writing to your MP, and please, please do so, to protect the most vulnerable in our society.

Emmaus Discover Summer Camp

Young people in Years 8 to 13 are invited to join Emmaus Discover Summer Camp, a week away in Pembrokeshire from 5-9 August 2026, priced at £275 all-inclusive.

The week includes walks in the fresh air, the chance to meet other young Catholics from across the Archdiocese, trips out, daily Mass, thought-provoking talks with time to ask questions, great food, plenty of free time, and a campfire.

Only a few places remain , and the registration deadline has now moved to 25 July , so please don't delay.

This Sunday, 12th July , the Church marks Sea Sunday , a special day of prayer for all those who live and work at sea. It is an opportunity to recognise the vital contribution made by seafarers and fishers, whose work touches every aspect of our daily lives, often without us ever noticing.

The goods we rely on, from food and clothing to fuel and medicine, are transported across the world's oceans by dedicated crews who frequently work in difficult and hazardous conditions. Today, many seafarers face additional challenges as geopolitical tensions continue to affect key shipping routes, including the Straits of Hormuz and the Red and Black Seas . These are risks and pressures that most of us will never experience firsthand.

Many seafarers are understandably anxious about their own safety and the wellbeing of their colleagues. Particular concern remains for the 20,000–30,000 seafarers affected by the closure of the Straits of Hormuz , leaving many facing uncertainty and isolation. At times like these, the work of Stella Maris becomes even more important.

Stella Maris provides vital pastoral, practical and emotional support to seafarers and fishers around the world. Additional helplines and online support services are available around the clock for those working in conflict-affected regions. Through its chaplains, ship visitors and welfare teams, Stella Maris offers a lifeline to those who often spend months away from home and loved ones.

As a Stella Maris Ship Welfare Visitor serving the ports of Cardiff and Newport , I continue to visit cargo ships and tankers and see firsthand the challenges faced by crews. Increasingly, conversations centre on concerns for personal safety, worries about family members back home, and fears for colleagues caught up in dangerous situations. These pressures contribute to stress, loneliness and uncertainty for many seafarers.

One of the most encouraging aspects of this ministry is the generosity shown by parishioners. Thank you to everyone who has supported seafarers in the past. The collection box in the church narthex is rarely empty, and your kindness makes a tremendous difference. Time and again, I have seen seafarers' faces light up when they receive gifts from our parish community. These simple acts of generosity reassure them that they are remembered, cared for and held in prayer.

This Sea Sunday , we once again invite you to support seafarers and fishers through prayer, donations and practical gifts.

Sea Sunday is Sunday 12th July. It is when the Church prays for all those who live and work at sea. Seafarers and fishers play a vital role in all of our lives, but they often work in difficult, hazardous conditions. Those travelling through areas like the Straits of Hormuz and the Red and Black Sea, facing risks most of us will never experience.

Many seafarers are scared and anxious about their own situation. Many fear for friends and colleagues especially for the 20-30,000 seafarers stuck on their vessels due to the shutting of the Straits of Hormuz. Stella Maris is able to help and support them. Additional help lines and on-line areas, available 24/7, have been set up for those seafarers in the conflict areas. Your support for Stella Maris makes a big difference to them and to all seafarers and fishers in need. This collection is vital to enable Stella Maris (formerly called Apostleship of the Sea) to continue its important work - so please give generously.

As a Stella Maris Ship Welfare Visitor I continue to visit cargo ships and tankers in the ports of Cardiff and Newport. I am very conscious of the increasing concerns amongst the crews for their own safety and for their families who are far away. They are worried for the safety and wellbeing of colleagues trapped by the Straits of Hormuz and for their families too. This all contributes to greater stress, unhappiness and loneliness.

Thank you very much for all you have given for seafarers in the past. The box in the narthex is rarely empty; your ongoing support is amazing and certainly makes my role easier. The seafarers’ faces light up when I hand over your gifts. It means a great deal to them to know that they are not forgotten, that you care about them and pray for them and their families.

This Sea Sunday, I am asking once again for items such as:

biscuits, chocolates, chewing gum,
toiletries such as soap, shower gel, deodorant, toothpaste & toothbrushes

They have invited Canon Andrew Lightbrown , a prominent figure in the Church in Wales known for his commitment to interfaith dialogue, to speak alongside Dr Abdul-Azim Ahmed , the Deputy Director of the Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK at Cardiff University.

let’s help the Pope in His mission

This weekend (27th &28th July), we celebrate the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul.

Each year, around this liturgical feast, the traditional Peter’s Pence collection takes place. This is a concrete way to support the Holy Father in his mission of service to the universal Church.

This collection is more than a financial contribution; it is a visible gesture of communion with the Holy Father and of solidarity with his mission to bring the Gospel throughout the world.

“Let us resolve to bring his love everywhere, never forgetting that each of our sisters and brothers is a dwelling place of God and that his presence is manifested above all in the little ones, in the poor and the suffering.” Pope Leo XIV

We can take part in this mission in two simple ways

with prayer for the Holy Father and his intentions;
with an offering to Peter’s Pence for his apostolic mission, charitable initiatives, and humanitarian aid.

There will be a retiring collection after each mass this weekend. Donations can also be made on the Dona contactless machines in the narthex.

Thanks to donations to Peter’s Pence, it has been possible to fund 239 projects in 66 countries. (Source: annual report, June 2025)

Christmas Craft Fair – Update and Invitation to Get Involved

Hello everyone, I promised an update on the Christmas Craft Fair after Easter—and how quickly that time has flown!

I’ve been genuinely encouraged by the enthusiasm from so many of you, with a number of stalls already confirmed and several kind offers to help on the day, for which I’m very grateful. I’m also reaching out to crafters beyond our parish community to ensure we have a wide variety of crafts available, and I’ll be attending a local craft fair next month to gather ideas and inspiration for our own event.

Several people have offered to make items but would prefer not to run a stall, so if you would like to host a stall but don’t have crafts to sell, please do get in touch—I’d be very happy to match you up. We are also planning a raffle during the fair, so donations of prizes would be most welcome; we already have a generous offer of a homemade Christmas cake to get us started.

Join the Safeguarding Team at their Monthly Safeguarding Café

Since launching in 2024, the Safeguarding Cafés have proven to be an excellent way for the Safeguarding Team to connect with parishioners and safeguarding volunteers right across the Archdiocese. From Hereford to Swansea and Builth Wells to Cardiff, the team have been bringing these informal drop-in sessions to parish communities the length and breadth of the Archdiocese.

What are the Safeguarding Cafés?

The cafés are relaxed, drop-in sessions where anyone can come along for a coffee and a chat with a member of the Safeguarding Team. There is no need to book – just turn up between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm on the 4th Thursday of each month.

Whether you have a concern you would like to discuss, need help with an administrative matter, want to connect with the team as a safeguarding volunteer, or simply want to find out more about safeguarding in your parish, these sessions are open to all.

A national Catholic schools Art Competition is being held in the lead-up to Adoremus 2026 (Saturday 10 October), inviting young people to reflect creatively on themes such as the Blessed Sacrament, the presence of Jesus, and the beauty of our cathedrals. The Sacred Heart: A School of Love, Mercy, and Reparation

The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is more than a pious sentiment or a traditional image on a church wall. For the Church, it is a way of contemplating the mystery of Christ —his saving love made visible in his pierced side, culminating on the Cross, and continuing today in the life of grace.

What “Sacred Heart” Means

The Church teaches that the term “Sacred Heart of Jesus” denotes not merely “a piece of flesh,” but the entire mystery of Christ —his person, and his love considered in its most intimate essential reality: God’s infinite love for us .

In this sense, devotion to the Sacred Heart is a gaze on Jesus:

pierced by the lance,
whose side reveals a “wondrous sacrament”,
and from which “blood and water” flow—signs deeply connected with the Church’s life of grace.

This is why the Directory places devotion to the Sacred Heart within the Church’s wider scriptural and liturgical horizon: it is meant to lead believers to a deeper knowledge of Christ.

The Sacred Heart and the Gospel of Love

At the heart of Christian faith is God’s love—tender, real, and offered freely. The Sacred Heart devotion highlights that love as divine and human , not abstract. Pope Francis describes the Sacred Heart as a “synthesis of the Gospel” : it expresses our openness in faith and adoration to Christ’s divine-human love.

The Scriptures underline the same logic: love comes from God, and those who abide in love abide in God.

Not Just an Interior Feeling: Conversion and Reparation

The Sacred Heart devotion is also explicitly moral and spiritual, not only emotional. The Directory describes it as calling for:

conversion and reparation ,
love and gratitude ,
apostolic commitment ,
and dedication to Christ and his saving work.

That means the devotion should mature into real life: learning to return to God when life drifts, to repair the damage caused by sin, and to serve others with the charity that flows from Christ.

The Meek and Humble Heart

The Sacred Heart also teaches how Jesus transforms the burdens of human life. In the Gospel, Jesus invites those who are weary to come to him, promising rest, and describing himself as meek and humble of heart .

This connects directly to the Directory’s presentation of devotion as a way of looking at Christ pierced by love—and learning from him.

Approved Devotions: How Catholics Traditionally Live It

The Church recognizes that various practices grow around this devotion. Among them are:

personal consecration ,
family consecration ,
the Litany of the Sacred Heart ,
the act of reparation ,
and devotion to the First Fridays , which historically supported the return to confession and Communion.

Importantly, the Directory also cautions against reducing First Friday practices to mere routine or “credulity,” insisting on instruction and active faith —and it reminds Catholics of the primacy of Sunday as the foundational feast of Christian life.

Images Matter—But Theology Must Remain

Because devotion is often expressed visually, iconography has a role. The Directory says that connecting a devotion with its iconographic expression is normal and positive.

At the same time, it warns that inconveniences can arise when images no longer communicate the devotion’s theological content—especially when art becomes over-sentimental and fails to encourage a reverent approach to the mystery.

This is a helpful pastoral reminder: whatever the image, the devotion’s aim should stay anchored in Christ crucified— his side pierced , with blood and water flowing.

Sacred Heart Devotion and Private Revelations

Some popular devotion is linked historically to visions received by particular saints. The Church acknowledges these as meaningful but also clarifies how they fit in.

Pope Francis teaches that the Sacred Heart devotion:

is not an obligation to accept private revelations as if they were God’s Word,
and “cannot be said ‘to owe its origin to private revelations.’”

In other words: the devotion stands on Christ’s reality—his pierced love in Scripture and the living faith of the Church—and private revelations may be a supportive encouragement, not the foundation.

A Simple Way to Pray During the Week

If you’d like a practical rhythm that stays faithful to what the Church describes, consider this pattern:

A look at Christ : spend a few minutes contemplating the love revealed in his pierced side.
A response : make an act of love and gratitude, asking for conversion and a spirit of reparation.
A mission : choose one concrete act of charity during the week, letting Christ’s love pass into neighbor-love.

The Sacred Heart devotion is meant to shape a Christian life where love is not only felt, but lived—through prayer, repentance, and service rooted in Jesus’ merciful Heart.

Next weekend, we mark Day for Life , celebrated each year across England and Wales on the third Sunday of June . This year, it falls on Sunday 21st June .

Day for Life is an important moment in the life of the Church, reminding us of the dignity and sacredness of every human life. The Church teaches that life is to be cherished and protected from conception through to natural death , and this day offers an opportunity to reflect more deeply on that call.

The theme for this year is: “The Wonder of the Child in the Womb.”

It invites us to recognise and celebrate the beauty and mystery of new life, and to renew our commitment to supporting both mothers and their unborn children with compassion and care.

Supporting the Day for Life Fund

A second collection will be taken at both Masses next weekend in support of the Day for Life Fund . This fund provides vital financial assistance to organisations working to uphold the Church’s mission of protecting human life at every stage.

Led by missionaries from Catholic Christian Outreach (CCO) , the day will introduce the approach of Intentional Accompaniment — a simple but powerful way of journeying with others. Rather than feeling unsure about how to share our faith, we are invited to meet people where they are, listen attentively, and gently guide them towards a deeper relationship with Christ.

A Summer of Mission Across the Archdiocese

This summer, the Archdiocese is delighted to partner with Catholic Christian Outreach (CCO) for a three-week Diocesan Mission taking place across Cardiff-Menevia from 19th June to 5th July 2026 .

As part of this mission, twelve CCO missionaries will join us, bringing their experience and enthusiasm to help renew and strengthen our call to evangelisation. Central to their work is a practical approach known as Intentional Accompaniment — learning how to walk alongside others, supporting them on their journey of faith and gently leading them towards a deeper relationship with Christ.

A wide range of events and opportunities are being offered throughout the mission, all open to everyone in the Diocese:

First Holy Communion

We warmly congratulate the twenty children from our parish who recently received their First Holy Communion. It was a joyful and grace-filled occasion for them, their families, and our whole community. Since Christmas, a total of sixty children have now taken this important step in their journey of faith, and we give thanks for each one of them.

Looking ahead, the next preparation programme will begin shortly after Christmas, early in the new year. It will be open to children who will be in Years 3 to 6 in the academic year 2026/27.

Further details and application forms will be made available after the Summer holidays. In the meantime, we are very happy to receive early expressions of interest from families who wish their children to take part.

CAFOD Campaign: Tackling the Global Debt Crisis

The campaign to tackle the global debt crisis continues to gather momentum, as parishes across England and Wales stand in solidarity with communities most affected.

Last year, 500 parishes joined the global Church’s call to address the growing debt crisis that is having a devastating impact on low-income countries. We extend our sincere thanks to all the parishes in the Archdiocese of Cardiff-Menevia that took part in this vital effort.

Pope Francis repeatedly called for action during the Jubilee Year, inspiring a powerful response. More than 44,000 people signed CAFOD’s petition, demonstrating a strong commitment to justice and global solidarity. Encouragingly, 2025 brought hopeful signs of progress, and this year we are building on that momentum.

Why this matters

While borrowing is a normal part of economic life for all countries, low-income nations are facing a deeply unfair system. Due to complex global financial structures, they are often forced to pay significantly higher interest rates than wealthier countries. In many cases, the original debt has already been repaid, but spiralling interest keeps nations trapped in a relentless cycle.

This has serious consequences. Money that should go towards essential services—such as food, healthcare, and education—is instead diverted to repay creditors. Governments are left facing impossible choices between caring for their people and meeting debt obligations.

Wesley Chibamba, Policy and Advocacy Officer for Caritas Africa, highlights the human cost:

“We have to find a solution. At the moment people are dying because they can’t access healthcare. Children cannot go to school. People are going hungry and children are sleeping on empty stomachs because the governments have debt obligations. Governments don’t have the capacity to respond to any kind of humanitarian crisis.”

Signs of hope—and the road ahead

Thanks to global campaigning efforts during the Jubilee Year, the debt crisis has risen up the agenda at international summits. World leaders have acknowledged the need for urgent reform of the global financial system.

However, much more needs to be done. A fair and sustainable system is essential so that low-income countries can thrive rather than struggle under unsustainable debt.

The UK has a unique opportunity to lead change, as it prepares to host the G20 in 2027. This gathering of the world’s most powerful economies represents a critical moment to push for meaningful reform.

On Sunday 7th June, the Corpus Christi Procession will once more make its way through the streets of Cardiff.

The Procession will start at 3:00pm from Nazareth House (please arrive by 2:30pm), moving along Colum Road and Park Place, past the Museum and City Hall, through the underpass and on to Greyfriars. Entering Ordinary Time

Ordinary Time begins after the Christmas and Epiphany season, pauses for Lent, and then resumes after Pentecost, continuing until Advent.

During this time, the Church focuses on the life and teachings of Jesus, especially on Sundays. Week by week, we listen to the Gospel readings, which help us come to know Christ more deeply.

Ordinary Time reminds us that our faith is lived not only in special seasons, but in everyday life. It is a time to grow as disciples, allowing Christ to be present in all we do.

As we take part in Sunday Mass and hear the Word of God, may it strengthen our faith, draw us closer to God, and inspire us to live with love and charity each day.

The Cycle of Prayer: During Ordinary Time (Summer, up to September)

We are asked to pray for these intentions:

A Deeper Understanding between Christians and Jews;
Those who Suffer Persecution, Oppression and Denial of Human Rights;

This weekend (23 ^rd & 24 ^th May), 13 of our children will receive Jesus for the first time in the Holy Eucharist. Next weekend (30 ^th & 31 ^st May), another 9 children will also receive Him for the first time.

First Holy Communion is a beautiful and unforgettable personal meeting with Jesus, when He gives Himself to us as food for the soul under the appearances of bread and wine.

Please keep all the children (and their families) in your prayers as they prepare and rejoice in this great step of belonging to Christ and His Church.

This year's Corpus Christi Procession will start from Nazareth House at 3:00pm (please arrive by 2:30pm), moving along Colum Drive and Park Place, past the Museum and City Hall, through the underpass and on to Greyfriars. It will then head down Park Place and along Queen Street before finishing at St David’s Metropolitan Cathedral in Charles Street.

May is traditionally a Marian month , a special time to grow in faith through prayer with Mary.

As the Church continues the joy of Easter through Pentecost , our devotion to Our Lady is best lived in harmony with the liturgical year—keeping Christ and the Paschal Mystery at the heart of our prayer.

Mary’s faithful presence at Easter and Pentecost invites us to deepen our trust in God and openness to the Holy Spirit. In this spirit, you are encouraged to make May a month of prayer with Mary , especially through the daily Rosary , which draws us more deeply into the mysteries of Christ.

A Simple invitation: During May, consider committing to praying the Rosary each day, even briefly.

Prayer (for the beginning of May)

Mary, Queen of Heaven, teach us to pray with faith.

Guide us during Eastertide to grow closer to your Son,

and help us welcome the gift of the Holy Spirit into our daily lives. Amen.

We have received the following statement from Archbishop Mark , shared after the recent meeting of the Catholic Bishops of England and Wales in Rome.

In solidarity with the Holy Father, the Bishops invite all people of goodwill to renew their commitment to peace and justice, and they ask Catholics in particular to redouble their prayers for those affected by conflict across the world. Rooted in the hope of Easter, this message reminds us of our shared Christian responsibility to be peacemakers and bridge‑builders.

We are encouraged to read the statement prayerfully and to join with the Bishops and the wider Church in praying for an enduring peace founded on justice, dialogue and fraternity.
